With hearts filled with gratitude and sorrow, we share the news that William “Temple” Baldwin passed away peacefully surrounded by family on September 8, 2026. Temple was born on February 9, 1946, to Gertrude Hoffman and William “Raymond” Baldwin. As a teenager, his mother made a garage sale purchase that would change his life: a Model A car to rebuild in the backyard. This kicked off a lifetime of love for cars and ultimately a legacy of expertise in pre-1910 vehicles. Temple attended Northern Arizona University, where he met Diane Schmidt. Diane grew up in Temple’s neighborhood in California, and one day she sat next to Temple in the lunchroom, not knowing who he was. When he told her he was from Arcadia, she turned to him and said, “You must know Temple Baldwin!” (a refrain he became known for…you’ve probably seen the hats). He ultimately married Diane, and they were lovingly together for 57 years. Diane and Temple had two children, Brett (Morgan) and Erin (Nate). Temple was a wonderful father who taught his children joy, strength, and love. This was later extended to his granddaughter, Zoey, who inherited his fantastic sense of humor and compassionate nature. It was impossible to know Temple and not think of him as a friend. His generosity, warmth, and humor were immediately evident, and his garage was always open. He lived with kindness and humility, and he was an unparalleled source of knowledge about the horseless carriage. He constantly ran out of gas, leading to many roadside jaunts with a gas can and a new friend. Temple loved a good adventure and a great junkyard, and he never took life too seriously. He always had a sparkle in his eye, and while he knew when to be serious, he could be delightfully comedic. He loved people fiercely and spent his life building a community of friends who ultimately became family. His impact on this world will never be forgotten, living on in our fondest memories. As Temple would say, “If I don’t see you in the future, I will see you in the past.” Celebrations of life will take place in the spring in both San Diego and Twin Falls. Details to follow.
