At 12:00, the afternoon of November 14, 2025 the world lost a most precious person, Vickie A. Backes. After five arduous months of suffering from a multitude of issues, the Lord mercifully brought her home, free from pain and reunited with her loved ones lost. Vickie was born on May 29, 1948 to Charles and Marjorie Schreiber in Pontiac, Michigan. She had a sister, Duffy, and a brother named Skip. Vickie lost her brother and father early in life and her mother and sister also preceded her in passing, along with her daughter Carrie.
After graduating high school, Vickie began her long lasting administrative career, first with the city of Pontiac, later moving to Phoenix, Arizona on July 8th, 1983 and joining Farm Bureau Insurance in 1984. Like her mother before her, she was an incredibly hard and valued worker, starting in the mail room and working her way up the corporate ladder to being the administrative assistant to the regional director of the company. She had many duties but one large one she loved was planning banquets, training seminars, and other yearly events that allowed her to travel across the country to places like Las Vegas, Denver and Disney World in Florida, just to name a few as she worked closely with other regions.
As proud of her career as she was, her real pride and joy came from her family. Vickie met her husband Mike Backes in December 1967 when she and his sister and close friend, Diana, were walking out the front door of his parents house, wearing a peacoat with her long dark hair, and Mike was approaching the house just arriving home on leave from Marine Corp. The connection was instant, however, after a few dates life happened and the two went their separate ways not to reunite until 1983 in Arizona and were married on November 23rd,1984. In March of 1985, they got quite a surprise and were blessed with Vickies two grandchildren to raise, Destini being 3 years old and Chuck only a baby of 9 months. The next forty-two years were an amazing adventure that was molded by the grace, love and guidance of a strong, patient, loving woman. Her family, four grandchildren, Destini, Chuck, Amber and Desiree, seven great grandchildren,Taylor, Brandon, Ryleigh,Tony, Isaiah, Chevelle and Nova were the fuel that kept Vickie going through a life full of love and loss. She loved her family so much and took pride in the planning of every birthday, and every holiday held in our home to every piece of sage advice and kind wisdom she always had to offer.
Beyond her family, any person that met Vickie could instantly tell the unique, wonderful character that she had and was loved by everyone. She had friends across the country and especially loved her Bunco girls that she gathered with monthly, including Nita, whom she loved so much. If you knew her you instantly loved her.
The world lost an amazing woman, but she built the capacity for love in her family and her memory, along with everything she was will be carried forward with each generation to come.
