The story of
Syvutus Clarence Wesson II passed away peacefully on January 29, 2024, at the age of 92 near Portland, Oregon. He was born on February 28, 1931, in Hempstead County, Arkansas. Family and community were the most important part of Syvutus’ life. His “Love Language” was service to others. If Syvutus saw a need, he would fill it simply because he could with his remarkable talent for building anything or accomplishing any task in the most efficient manner possible. Syvutus also cherished cooking for those he loved and anyone who wanted to enjoy good food. While maintaining his physical fitness was crucial, Syvutus also enjoyed relaxing at home watching basketball or football, playing solitaire, and reading everything from the Bible to romance novels. In his early years, Syvutus worked as a farm hand in Arkansas and Texas. He served in the Army from 1953 to 1956 and was deployed to Korea as a Specialist 3rd Class in construction. After his military service, he embarked on a diverse career path. He spent years resetting the main event floor at Portland's Memorial Coliseum. He also served as a cook in multiple venues, was a long-haul truck driver and worked as an independent recycler for nearly 30 years. Syvutus worshiped at Irvington Covenant Church and Maranatha Church in Portland. He was an active member of his church communities and found solace and strength in his faith in God and the lifelong friendships he developed. Syvutus is survived by his daughter, Deanna Wesson-Mitchell, his sisters Hazel Webb and Lauretta Wesson, his brother Randolph Wesson, his former wife Jo Wesson, his son-in-law JaMarr Mitchell, and his grandchildren Antony, Bryannah, Dakari, and Omari. He also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews. Syvutus was preceded in death by his beloved daughter Stacy J. Dunn, his mother Laura Wesson, his father Syvutus C. Wesson I, his brother Benny Wesson, sisters Helen Jones, Neallie Wheaton, Ella Walker, and former son-in-law Eric T. Dunn. As Syvutus wished, the family will host a Celebration of Life BBQ Picnic in Summer 2024.
