Shirley Evelyn Finley (Bondelid), 86 years young, died on September 9, 2025 in Seattle. Shirley was born on June 1, 1939 in Seattle to Melvin and Ruth (Rehnman) Bondelid. Soon after her birth, her parents moved the family to Port Angeles, Washington, where her father moved his optometry practice.
Shirley graduated from Port Angeles High School in 1957, where she met her first husband Verne Lindberg, they were married on August 23, 1958, after his graduation from the University of Washington they moved to Everett Washington, where her sons Craig and Jay were born.
The family returned to Seattle in 1968. Being an accomplished organist, she supported a few local churches Beacon Lutheran, Queen Ann Lutheran, Prospect Congregational and St. Marks Cathedral. When the boys were older Shirley began her college career at Cornish School of the Arts in music. Her studies took her to Italy, France and Germany. Studying with and becoming great friends with fellow organists Parker Cook and Peter Hallock.
While participating in the choir at St. Mark’s she met her second husband Alan H. Finley. They were married on February 5, 1980, moving to Cincinnati following Alan’s career in pediatric medicine. After Alan’s retirement, they returned to Washington, building a house in Port Townsend. Following a few years of commuting to Seattle – for commitments at Cornish, St. Mark’s and Alan’s trips to Seattle Childrens, it was decided a move to Victoria, B.C. to be closer to Alan’s big brother.
She and Alan attended Christ Cathedral in Victoria BC, where they both sang in the choir. Shirley also assisted in the acquisition of a Hellmuth Wolff organ, installed in 2008.
Always a student, she obtained her Ministries Certificate in 2006 from The University of the South School of Theology. She even obtained her Canadian citizenship.
After Alan passed away in 2014, Shirley returned to Seattle to be closer to her sons.
One would wonder if adventure was in her nature, or if adventure found her. Shirley once volunteered to drive a pickup for donation, not wanting to miss out, Alan and Paul Thompson hopped along for the ride, the three Amigo’s drove the pickup to New Mexico from Cincinnati. Shirley and Alan were once hijacked to Cuba enroute on one of their cruises.
She was an avid reader, journal keeper, appreciator and student of the arts, a student of theology, horse enthusiast (owner & breeder), avid traveler and loved spending time with her family. She faithfully supported her church, the arts and music.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Melvin, Clarence, Donald and Dick; and husbands Verne and Alan. She is survived by her sons Craig (Kish) of Seattle, Jay (Diane) of Shoreline; Stepchildren Brenda (Martin) of Edmonton; Donna (Jack) of Calgary; and Brian (Donna) of Campbellford; Grandchildren Ben (Annais), Rebecca (Addison), Steven (Ashley), Eve, Kelsey, Jeffrey, Caitlin (Damian), Mary and Jakob; and great-grandchildren Odin, Esper and Eryss.
Service will be held at St. Clement’s Episcopal Church – 1501 32nd Ave South, Seattle, WA 98144 on Saturday May 30th at 3:00 p.m.
