The story of Robert
Robert Howard Tamis, MD, beloved father and grandfather, of Phoenix, Arizona, died on November 30, 2022, at the age of 92. He graduated from Duke University and attended NYU for medical school. “Dr. Bob” was an OBGYN and practiced medicine in the Phoenix area for almost 50 years. He brought thousands of babies into the world and was a tireless advocate for a woman’s right to choose and abortion rights, serving as a Board member for the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL). Later in his career, he focused his practice on in-vitro fertilization and 38 years ago, produced the first test tube baby in Arizona. He was also a Board member of the International Cancer Advocacy Network (ICAN). He was a talented artist and spent most of his retirement years making beautiful glass art. Dr. Bob is survived by three children: Wendy Tamis (Scott) of Lafayette, CA; Bonnie Jortberg (Rich) of Boulder, CO; Marc Tamis (Jodi) of Gray Lakes, IL; three stepchildren: Lisa Tear (Rich) of San Diego, CA, Brant Zell (Cherie) of August, GA, and Kurt Zell of Phoenix, AZ; 11 grandchildren; and his beloved service dog, Lola. A Celebration of Life for Dr. Bob will be held in the near future. In honor of his amazing life, family members are encouraging donations to ICAN (Askican.org) NARAL (prochoiceamerica.org), or Planned Parenthood Action Fund.
