Robert (Bob) August Schafer, 80, passed away unexpectedly at his home on August 27, 2023. A long time resident of Oregon, Bob was born on December 4, 1942, to August and Betty Schafer in Portland, OR and was the oldest of three children,
An Eagle Scout, Bob graduated from Dwight David Eisenhower Senior High School in Yakima, WA, in 1961. In 1967, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology from Mount Angel College in Mount Angel, Oregon.
Following his graduation from Mount Angel College, he enlisted in the United States Army in the summer of 1967. He completed the US Army Infantry Officer Candidate School in February 1968 at Fort Benning, GA and was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the US Army Military Intelligence Corps. After attending the US Army Intelligence School at Fort Holabird, MD, he served a combat tour in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970. His military decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.
After completing his military service, Bob went on to earn his Master of Science Degree in Education from the Oregon College of Education in 1976.
Bob was a Born Again Christian, a good man who really loved his family. He loved animals and the great outdoors.
He was preceded in death by his parents, August and Betty Schafer of Stayton, OR. He is survived by his sister, Fran and his brother, Chuck.
Services will be held at the Willamette National Cemetery on October 17, 2023 at 11:30 AM.
