Peter (birth name Elmer) Lowell Sellars, 99, born April 23, 1924, peacefully passed on Christmas Eve at 9:00 pm, December 24th, 2023, in Gilbert, Arizona. Three months before he passed, he prayed with a hospital chaplain for forgiveness and said he believed in and loved Jesus.
Peter was born to William Alex Sellars and Jennie Electa Foster in Stewartsville, Clinton County, Missouri and grew up in various places in Missouri, sometimes living on farms. He went to grade school in Stewartsville and graduated from Birch Tree High School in Birch Tree, Missouri. After high school he joined the Army Air Corp in February 1943, and flew B17 and B24 bombers in the Pacific Theater during and after World War II, but never in combat. He was then a flight instructor for the Air Force until 1960. After that he held various jobs, including real estate broker.
Peter loved the outdoors, flying, and taking the family on picnics and adventurous outings. During the workweek, while flying around training flight students, he would spot interesting things for us to explore on the weekends. He loved to tell jokes, had a positive attitude, rarely complained, loved to study nutrition, had amazing luck in playing Bingo at his assisted living home, and never had any major disease.
Predeceased were his parents, his four brothers and sisters; Claud W. Sellars, Vernon Milton Sellars, Jennie Marie Oldstead, and Aldora May Tune; his ex-wives Susan Louise Falb and Lodema Louise Sellars-Gignac, and a grandson, John Paul Foster.
Peter married Susan in April 1944. Susan’s children, all still living, are Katherine Louise Taltre, Andrew Lowell Sellars (Chris), Mark Leighton Sellars (Connie), Susanna Lynn Sellars, Paul Leslie Sellars, and Deborah Lee Flora (Brad). Peter divorced Susan and married Lodema in 1971 and had Lisa Louise Sellars, still living. Peter is also survived by 9 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren.
It was Peter’s desire to be cremated and to have some of his ashes scattered in a couple of his favorite places where he enjoyed taking his family on picnics, and some to be interred at the Montier, Missouri Cemetery near his dad. A celebration of life will be held in his honor, date to be announced later.
