Michael James Pivarnik (73) of Superior, CO passed away surrounded by family and friends on the morning of August 4, 2025 after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Ford City, Pennsylvania on June 18, 1952 to Margaret and Joseph Pivarnik, who preceded him in death.
Mike is survived and missed by his wife Eliese (Tanner) Pivarnik of 36 years, his children Austin (Rachel), Dylan, Lana, and his grandchildren, Poppy and Emma. He is also survived by his siblings and their families: Joseph and Nancy Pivarnik, Elaine and Brian Haughin, Denise and Steve Demeter, and many loving in-laws, aunts, nieces, and nephews.
After graduating from Ford City High School in 1970, Mike attended Penn State where he graduated with a degree in Mineral Economics and became a lifelong Nittany Lion fan. He joined the Navy and served four years aboard the USS Edward McDonnell. Mike worked at IBM before returning to Penn State for a third time to earn an MBA in Finance.
With his MBA, he moved back to Pittsburgh and worked at PNC as an oil and gas commercial lender where he met his loving wife and had his first son, Austin. The family then moved to Indiana, PA where Dylan and Lana were born. Mike was the CFO at Mid East Oil, President of Habitat for Humanity, and helped start a youth travel basketball team that played around the state. In addition, he travelled around the country for 25 years as the Managing Trustee for the Richard E. Fox Charitable Foundation allocating scholarships and grants to further Free Market Economics.
The family moved to Steamboat Springs, Colorado in 2005 in search of a great adventure which Mike found exploring national parks, skiing powder-covered mountains, and spending time golfing. He loved his family deeply and spent his last years in Superior, Colorado surrounded by his children and grandchildren - sharing his love of golf, puzzles, and the pursuit of knowledge. He will be missed greatly for his kindness, steadiness, and hearty laugh.
A celebration of Mike's life will be held in Steamboat Springs at a later date.
