The story of
Michael Felix Steensma, born January 5, 1963, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in Portland, Oregon of a massive heart attack on May 5, 2024. Michael was a devoted and very caring husband to Nancy and a proud and loving father to Analies and Kees. He was also a true and loyal friend to many and an extraordinarily generous man. Through the years, Michael mentored MBA students from Willamette University and never hesitated to invite them to stay in his and Nancy’s home during their schooling, treating them like family and remaining in contact long after those studies were completed. Michael’s quirky and unusual sense of humor and his teasing personality are traits that all who knew him will remember. Michael was born in Wahroonga, Australia to Ellen Van Booren and Felix Maarten Steensma and emigrated with his parents to Monterey, California where he grew up. He graduated from Monterey High School, San Jose State University, Nyenrode Business University in Holland, and received his Master’s Degree from London School of Economics. Upon returning to the states, he married Nancy and they settled in Portland, Oregon. Michael worked many years as a Project Manager with various global firms, and for the last 12 years for Kaiser Permanente. He was pre-deceased by his mother and father, his sister, Loesje and brother, Greg. Michael is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy, his loving children, Analies and Kees, his mother-in-law, Betty, and extended family near and far. A Celebration of Life is being planned with information to follow. If you wish to honor Michael, he was passionate about Michelle’s Love, an organization devoted to helping single parents and their needs as they deal with cancer. Michael’s mom was a single mother and a cancer survivor.
