The story of Marion
Marion Reid Alspaugh passed at exactly Midnight on 3 June 2023 with her daughter at her side, she took her last breath in this life, and woke up in the next life, ready for a new adventure. She had been suffering from COPD and lung cancer and was looking forward to going Home to see her loved ones who had preceded her in death. Namely, her husband of 60 years, Gene, so they could once again go on walks and finally enjoy dancing. Marion was born in Glendale, California on 5 July 1941 to John Dwight and Muriel (Meacham) Simmons. She was the last of 4 children, an unnamed Baby Girl, Robert Courteney Simmons and Alice Kendall (Russell Mechling) Simmons and the last to pass on. Alice had recently passed on 2 March 2023. She grew up in Southern California, attending Verdugo Hills High School and loved going to the beach and traveling with her mother. Marion went to school to become a Dental Assistant and worked in the Dental field until she retired in the 1990s to travel the country with Gene in their 37' King of the Road 5th Wheel. They belonged to Thousand Trails, NACO West and several other campground associations which allowed them to camp in nearly 48 States. They would often take various Grandchildren with them on their adventures which all the grandkids remember fondly. Marion married Donald Page Abbott, but as a Newlywed, Donald was killed when the airplane he was flying plunged into a mountainside because of a down draught in the Colorado Rockies. The following New Years Eve, Gene saw Marion from across a crowded room and inquired about the tall, striking beauty. They were married the following April in Las Vegas, Nevada. Marion & Gene settled in West Covina, California, raising 2 daughters, one, Nanci Jene (Houck) preceded her in death in 2000, leaving behind 3 little children, Amanda Jene (Josh Kirby), Terrence Daniel Houck, and Chandler Herbert. Gene's passing in 2016 was a shock to everyone and Marion's health declined rapidly in the years after. In 2020 Marion moved from Las Vegas, Nevada to Sandy, Utah to be closer to her daughter, Valerie Lyn (Rolf Linderoth), and many of the grandchildren. Some of her favorite activities were playing pinocle, bowling, playing Bingo, traveling, cruising, camping, going to museums, walking around old cemeteries and being with the grandchildren. Survived by her daughter, Valerie, grandchildren, Robert Courtenay Alspaugh, Johnathan Andrew Thomas Johnson, Katherine Louise "Katie"(Gardner), Rebekah Laurissa Parkinson, Bradley Michael Dean Parkinson, Emily Michelle (Seth Stacey), and Abbie Nicole (Karsten Jenson). Also her much loved great granddaughter, Miss Ana Marie Gardner. Marion was looking forward to greeting Miss Lila Denise Jenson in November, 2023. We like to think Marion is now spending this time, until Lila's birth, playing with her and taking walks with her and Gene. She also leaves behind a niece, Laurel Mechling, 2 nephews, Dale Craig Simmons and Robert John Simmons, as well as numerous close friends who were more like sisters to her, Evelyn "June" Ackerman and Guiseppina "Pina" Hughes and even to the end, she talked to both nearly every day. Marion's traveling days are not over. It is her wish that she and Gene's ashes be combined and turned into beautiful memorial marbles and given to each of her grandchildren, also to June and Pina. Valerie will also carry 2 marbles with her when she embarks on an epic world adventure Marion wanted so badly to go on. Living on a residential cruise, traveling the world. That way, Marion and Gene together can continue to travel the world, with their daughter, going to all the exotic places they used to dream of. At the end of 5-10 years of sailing, there will be a memorial service in Redwoods National Park, at a date all the Grandchildren that can be present. Instead of scattering Marion & Gene's ashes (which is illegal), as Gene had requested, a beautiful ceremony will take place and one of the marbles will be lovingly buried. A beautiful resting place for a beautiful woman (couple) who knew how to live life to the fullest.
