The story of
Our dad, Marcelo Discartin, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2025, in San Diego, surrounded by people who loved him. We’re especially grateful for the many friends and family members who stopped in during his final days to sit with him, talk with him, and remind him just how loved he was. To us, he was larger than life. He was the one who taught us how to bait a hook, how to work hard, and how to be there for others. He was so witty, the kind of smart that showed up in unexpected ways. He could outplay anyone at Words With Friends, and somehow always knew random facts that ended up being useful. He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, but lived most of his life in San Diego, CA and Kansas where he worked at the same company for 20 years (SPX/Marley), but his real work and impact was in the way he showed up for people. Our dad sacrificed so much so that we, his kids, could have better. He didn’t always say it out loud, but we felt it in every meal he cooked, every ride he gave, every time he put us before himself. Anyone who knew him knew that fishing wasn't just what he did, it was who he was. It was how he connected with friends but especially with his son, Matthew. It’s some of our favorite memories with him. Before becoming a father, he loved to stir up trouble with friends who were more like chosen siblings. He was mischievous in the best way. He is survived by his daughter, Monique (and Peter), and his son, Matthew and by his mother, Shige; his siblings Marcus (and Suzi), Marcia (and Juan), Ricky, Roberto, Ana, and his many nieces and nephews; and a chosen family of friends who never left his side. We don’t have service details yet, but we’re planning a celebration of his life and will share updates on Facebook. Thank you to everyone who has reached out, visited, or simply kept him in your thoughts. He felt the love, and so do we.
