It is with great sorrow that we report that Maggie Butler passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 25th, 2026. She is survived by her surviving children Beatrice Butler and Benjamin Butler, her grandchildren Rebecca and Andrew Butler, Amber and May Eklund Butler, and her siblings, Anne Downing, Mary Meade Winn, and James Gordon. Maggie was preceded in death by her youngest child, Lewis Butler. Maggie helped found the Butler Institute in Guadalajara, Mexico when she was 28. She was an excellent poet and dancer, and she traveled extensively. She was a philanthropist who donated frequently to humanitarian causes without any fanfare. She was a graceful, reserved, and brilliant woman. She will be dearly missed by her family, students and friends. She asked that there be no ceremonial service. She also asked that no flowers be sent, so please feel free to donate to your favorite charity in her name. Her family is trying to host a memorial dance in her name.
