The story of
Joseph “Joe” Ruhnke, of Long Beach, California passed away peacefully on March 15, 2026 surrounded by loved ones, after a long battle with ALS. Joe was born on November 26, 1964, in Addison, Illinois, to Richard and Carol Ruhnke. After graduating from Addison Trail High School in 1982, he enjoyed a long career in the hospitality industry as a waiter, hotel manager, and accountant. In 1990, he moved to San Francisco with the love of his life, Rene Lange, and he completed a degree in Accounting. In a tragic turn of events, Rene became ill with cancer. During this hardship, marriage equality became legal; Joe and Rene were married at Rene’s bedside shortly before he passed away. Joe may have been widowed, but their love lived on. In 2011, Joe began a new chapter of his life in Southern California, working at several of Hollywood’s most exclusive hotels. He continued to cultivate close friendships and filled his home with his beloved Pomeranians and cats. In later years, Joe was diagnosed with ALS, facing this challenge with strength and grace. He was never short of support from devoted friends, family, and caregivers. Joe’s life was defined by friendship, resilience, and a love for the finer things in life. From his early years in Chicagoland to building a vibrant life in California, Joe created deep connections and lasting memories. He will be remembered for his warmth, wit, and the love he shared with so many. A private service will be held in late summer in a beautiful, blooming flower garden where the ashes of Joe and Rene will be buried together. Joe was preceded in death by his parents and husband. He is survived by sister Marie (Al) Harvath, brother James (Dena) Ruhnke, sister-in-law Madeline Aleman, nephew Michael (Kim) Harvath, nieces Emily (Anthony) Gray, Rebecca Ruhnke, and Rachel Ruhnke, as well as many cousins and beloved friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joe’s memory to ALSNetwork.org, PuppyLoveParty.com, or local animal shelters.
