Jon “Dunbar” Wakayama (77) passed away peacefully in his Utah home on March 12, 2024. He was born on October 4, 1946 in Honolulu, Hawaii to Jack and Genevieve (nee Reeves) Wakayama.
Dunbar worked as an air talent and engineer at various Sacramento radio stations from the late-‘60s to early-‘70s, and at various stations in Hawaii beginning in 1962. A Vietnam Air Force veteran, Dunbar worked at such stations, in Sacramento, as KSFM, KJAY, KXOA, KCRA and KRAK. From 1977-2009, he owned and operated Audio Media of Hawaii, Hawaii’s biggest audio production facility. After closing the doors to Audio Media/Studio X in April of 2009, Jon and his wife retired in Ogden, Utah and bought land where they could keep their plentiful menagerie of farm animals. There has always been a black and white cat living with them.
He was predeceased by his parents, a sister Priscilla Jane, and his son William, as well as several aunts and uncles, including his uncle and wartime hero, PFC Kenji Takubo. He is survived by his wife Norma, two daughters, six grandkids, a sister, a niece and a nephew, and a number of cousins. No funeral will be held and burial at the National Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu will be scheduled for June 2024.
