The story of
John D. Schuh, devoted husband, father, and Navy veteran, passed away May 23, 2026 at his residence in Tualatin, Oregon. He was 90. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Susan, and three children: John Jr. (Kim), Deborah (Glenn), and Kristin, as well as his sister, Lani, many nephews and a niece. He also leaves behind four grandchildren: Riley, Samantha, Darius, and Brandon. Born on May 6, 1936, to William Herbert “Herb” and Sybil Schuh in Tacoma, Wash., John had a happy childhood growing up in Tacoma and Aberdeen, Wash. He attended the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science in Forestry, specializing in Forest Products. After graduation, John reported for military duty with a commission from the NROTC. He served on the aircraft USS Yorktown, based in Long Beach, Calif., first as a boiler officer and then as a deck officer. On Sept. 23, 1958, while the ship was in Seattle, John and Susan were married and moved to Long Beach, Calif. After two deployments to the Western Pacific, John received notice to return to the states for separation from the Navy the same day his son, John, Jr. was born in 1960. John worked in the lumber industry his entire career, mostly in the Pacific Northwest, which was his favorite part of the country. With each job promotion, another move was required, which added up to 14 in total. Two notable mentions about John's career: In 1961, John’s father, Herb, convinced him to move his family to Aberdeen, Wash., so he could work for Herb’s business, Grays Harbor Chair. John took the job as manager of the four assembly plants until the business sold in 1963. Then in 1964, John joined Boise Cascade Corporation and stayed there 34 years as he climbed the corporate ladder. In the mid-1960s, John got his private pilot’s license. He loved to fly single-engine Cessnas, took his young family on many flights, and even co-owned a couple airplanes. Every chance he had, he went golfing, and fishing was also much enjoyed, whether it was in Alaska for salmon and halibut, Cabo San Lucas for marlin, or the Snake River for trout. Once retired, he and Susan enjoyed cruises and went to many international locations. John retired June 30, 1998 with plans to move permanently to Sunriver, Oregon where he and Susan had a vacation home. But fate stepped in and two of the grandchildren came to live with them. They stayed in the Portland area and raised the grandchildren while in retirement. John will always be remembered as a true, loyal friend and a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and uncle. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herb and Sybil.
