The story of
Joan Dellar, 85, passed away on October 26, 2025, in Mesa, Arizona. Born on March 5, 1940, in Spokane, Washington, Joan lived a life marked by service, education, and a deep appreciation for the natural world. After graduating from high school, Joan answered the call to serve her country by enlisting in the United States Navy. She served with dedication for three years before pursuing her passion for education. Her academic journey took her through Gonzaga University and Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington, and to the University of Leuven in Belgium- an experience that reflected her commitment to learning and global perspective. Joan went on to become a teacher, sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm with students in Alaska, the Panama Canal Zone, and Washington state, touching many lives with her guidance and care. Joan found joy in the outdoors and creative pursuits. As a younger person she enjoyed caring for and riding her horses. She also enjoyed hiking and riding her bike. Photography and reading were other hobbies that enriched her life. Joan was known for her laughter and caring heart, qualities that endeared her to those around her. Her warmth left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing her. She is lovingly remembered by Susan, her spouse of 26 years, niece, Kim Koch (Rick); stepsons, Erik Smith (Shari), and Ian Carter (Sarah); and stepdaughter, Kat Henschen (B.C.). She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary and Jack Dellar, and her brother, Jack Dellar, Jr. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
