In Loving Memory of Jean Harrell
January 2, 1939 – June 22, 2026
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Jean Harrell, affectionately known to so many as Mama Jean, who passed away peacefully on June 22, 2026, at the age of 87.
Jean was born on January 2, 1939, in Syracuse, New York, to Mary and Claude Osborne. She was the beloved sister of Sally and grew into a woman whose creativity, kindness, and unconditional love touched everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Jean often said she believed she was put on this earth to be a mother, and she fulfilled that calling every day of her life. She wasn't only a mother to her own children—she became a mother figure to neighbors, friends, and the many children who found comfort in her home. It is no surprise that nearly everyone knew her simply as Mama Jean.
She is lovingly remembered by her eight children: Leslie Jr., David, Susan, Daniel, Brenda, Joanne, Brandon, and Christina; her cherished grandchildren Michael, Sean, Jeremy, Andrew, and Justin; her daughter-in-law, Suhadi Hernandez; and her 17 beloved great-grandchildren.
Among those who held an especially treasured place in her heart were Brandon Jr., Brayden, and Bryson. As their Nana, she adored them beyond measure. They were her world, bringing her endless laughter, pride, and joy. Every moment spent with them was precious, and the love they shared will remain one of her family's most treasured memories.
Jean had a gift for creating beauty in everything she touched. Whether she was drawing, writing poetry, sewing blankets, or doing what she loved most—playing the blues on her guitar—she poured her heart into every creation.
Her artistic spirit reflected the warmth and generosity she shared so freely with others.
Her home was always filled with love and life.
Neighborhood children ran through the house as if it were their own, friends stopped by for coffee, and family was never far away.
No one ever left her home without feeling welcomed, cared for, and loved.
Some of her family's fondest memories are of finding her on the front porch in the quiet of the morning, coffee in one hand, a cigarette in the other, happily whistling along with the birds as the sun came up. Those simple moments captured who she was—a woman who found joy in everyday life.
Jean's legacy is not measured by possessions or accomplishments, but by the countless lives she touched with her compassion, creativity, and unwavering love. To her children, she was Mom.
To her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she was Nana.
To so many others, she was simply Mama Jean.
Though our hearts are heavy with her absence, we find comfort in the memories she gave us and the love she leaves behind.
May she watch over us in spirit as she did in life—with kindness, strength, and a mother's endless love.
She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
