Janice Faye Kearns, 77, of Arvada, Colorado, passed away on June 26, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, and a heart that was always open to others.
Janice was born on September 19, 1948, in Gordon, Nebraska, to Edward Bayliss and Doris (Cunningham) Bayliss . She grew up in the Nebraska Sandhills and graduated from Rushville Nebraska High School in 1966. In June of 1970, she married the love of her life, Thomas Kearns, beginning a partnership that would last nearly six decades.
If you ever met Janice, you felt welcome. That was just who she was. She never had an unkind word to say about anyone, and she had a remarkable ability to see the good in every person she encountered. She knew everyone in her community, even if they didn't know her, she always had her hand out to guide and help those around her.
Janice was a proud member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and loved traveling and taking vacations with her family. But perhaps her truest passion, outside of the people she loved, was her garden. Her flower bed was something truly special, built from pieces of family and friends' gardens over the years. It was her happy place, where she could go and, as she would say, play in the dirt.
Her dedication to serving others was perhaps best reflected in her years of volunteer work at the Arvada Food Bank. She began volunteering part time while still working and committed herself full time after retirement from Target. One of her highlights every year was coordinating the children’s backpack and Christmas toy drive programs that ensured the kids in the community had the necessary tools for successful start of school, and that no kid went without a present at Christmas. She would spend all year collecting resources, her family helped collect and store items for the upcoming programs.
Janice was preceded in death by her mother, Doris Carpenter; her father, Edward Bayliss; and her brother, Edward Bayliss Jr. She is survived by her loving husband, Thomas Kearns; her sons, Brian (Paige) Kearns and Greg Kearns; her grandchildren, Austin Kearns, Lauren Kearns, and Adelyn Kearns; and her sisters, Leah King, Diana (Jerry)Robb, and Judy Brown.
Janice held a quiet, steady faith that guided her life of service to others. Her family takes comfort in the words of Luke 23:42-43: "And he said, 'Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.' And he said to him, 'Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.'"
In lieu of flowers the family is asking that you make a donation to the Arvada Food Bank in memory of her. online - (https://cotable.org/donate/)
The family is organizing a Celebration of Life for Janice to be held on September 19th, what would have been her birthday. The location and time will be shared once finalized.
