The story of
The gentle current of his favorite fishing river will forever miss Howard Levett, who passed away peacefully on June 14, 2024, in Thornton, Colorado. He was 74 years old. Renowned for his meticulous fly tying and ability to lure in the wariest trout, Howard was a legend among anglers. His blog, "Wind Knots & Tangled Lines," with its witty writing and helpful tips, became a global resource for the sport. Howard was a super fan of the Beatles, and an avid collector of both their music and memorabilia. Born in Chicago on July 13, 1949, Howard was the third child of Leonard and Hermina (Schlesinger) Levett. The family moved to Denver, Colorado, in the 1950s, settling in Thornton where Howard attended Mapleton High School, graduating in 1967. He then attended Western State College in 1972. After college, unsure of his path, Howard entered the Broomfield Police Academy in 1973. His dedication to service led to a long and distinguished career. He wore many hats – detective, community program speaker, senior advocate, photographer – and received numerous awards and public recognition for his work. Retirement from the police force didn't slow Howard down. He continued serving his community as an Advisor for the Center for People with Disabilities in Denver. True to his Hebrew name, Chaim (meaning "life"), Howard lived a life of purpose, dedicated to the well-being of others. He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings Adrienne, Michael, and Lee and sister Ellen who died 10 days following Howard’s passing. He is survived by his son, Steve Slaughter; his brother, Stewart Levett; second “mom,” Rae Boehm and special friend, Diane DeFreece plus many cousins, nieces and friends. Family and friends will remember Howard as "Big Love" Howard, a man who embodied his name's meaning with a kind heart and willingness to help. A private service will be held by the family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Shield616.org.
