The story of
Gary James Humphrey peacefully passed away on December 4th, 2024 surrounded by his children and grandchildren. Gary Humphrey was born January 13th, 1950 in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. He was a father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was the second child of John and Hilda Humphrey and grew up with his brother John and sister Kathy. In high school, he developed a love of golf which eventually took him to Mesa, Arizona. Gary became a golf professional in 1972 and had an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration from North Idaho College in Coeur d’Alene. He took those credentials and started working as a pro at Camelot Golf Course, where he met his wife, at the time, Cindy, and later started his golf management business where he ran the golf courses for a retirement master plan community developer, Ross Farnsworth, of which he did for 35 years. His friend and family say to this day that he had the smoothest swing on the course of which he proved with nine hole-in-ones which was a feat few could claim. Mesa, Arizona became Gary’s home until his passing. He is survived by his 3 children, Bryan Humphrey, Kevin Humphrey and Shara Markwell, his 9 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild with 2 more on the way and his beloved Shi-Tzu, Goodman, who was there by his side until the very end. Gary’s greatest joy, as we often hear from his friends, was his family and his animals as they were also his family. He always said that his animals never talk back which made him love them more and they sure did give him the companionship and love that he so deserved. Gary spent his retirement as a “snowbird” of sorts spending summers in Pinetop, Arizona and winters in Mesa, Arizona. He loved his home in the White Mountains and couldn’t wait to get back up there when he felt better. He never had trouble making friends of which they all loved him, their dog park talks, and their short walks around the park. He had a wit and charm that drew people to him that made them stick around and call him a friend. He will be missed and never forgotten. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday February 1st at Sunshine Acres Children’s Home at 11am in the Chapel. A luncheon will follow and be held at Jon and Shara Markwell’s home which is on property. The address is 3405 N Higley Rd. Mesa, AZ 85215. In lieu of flowers or gifts please consider donating to Sunshine Acres Children’s Home.
