It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Fredrick Alan Goehler, who departed this life on May 14, 2025, at the age of 90. Born on June 22, 1934, in Chicago, Illinois, Fred eventually made his home in Puyallup, Washington, where he built a life defined by dedication to family, service, and remarkable professional achievements across multiple fields.
Fred was a devoted husband to Mary, whom he married on June 7, 1977, sharing 48 cherished years together.
He was the beloved son of Fredrick Albert Goehler and Lilian Bernice (Cohn).
Fred served our nation in the Air Force from May 1953 to May 1957 during the Korean War.
He leaves behind a loving family, including his children: Gregory, Leeann, Kevin, Tracy, Christina and Brad, as well as 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Fred found immense joy and fulfilled one of his most cherished roles as "Poppa" since the birth of his first grandson in 1980, a testament to his deep love for his family. Many family trips and special dinners were made all the more memorable as Fred took great pleasure in cooking for his family, and he especially loved holidays. He was inspired to carve the Halloween pumpkin, invite everyone for Thanksgiving and cook a huge turkey. He loved decorating the Christmas tree and baking traditional cookie recipes passed down from his parents.
Fred's professional life was distinguished by his diverse talents and leadership. His career in the culinary world was highly celebrated; he was a recipient of the "Chef of the Year" honor from the Washington State Chef's Association. His leadership extended to roles as executive chef for the Washington Athletic Club, Hilton Hotels, Red Lion Inns, Dino's Italian Restaurant Concord CA and Grazie's in Old Town Tacoma.
Fred was recognized with a special award from the American Academy of Chefs, signifying his elite standing. He was also known for his incredible ice carving skills and his participation in international culinary events. Beyond the kitchen, Fred also achieved significant success in real estate, honored as Realtor of the Year for Tacoma-Pierce County more than once and was elected President in 2002 by the association of realtors, a testament to his outstanding contributions in that field.
Fred finally decided after 20 years with Windermere to enjoy the slower pace of life, after 64 years of one service or another, to spend time traveling and enjoying his beloved cats whom he spoiled with affection and treats, and finishing his days in his garden both him and Mary took pride cultivating.
We extend our special thanks to "Welcome Home" residential care for providing Fred with three and a half years of excellent and compassionate care, as well as Envision hospice.
Fredrick Alan Goehler will be laid to rest with honors at Tahoma National Cemetery on July 3, 2025. This will be a family only event.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Fred's memory to:
