Douglas Lister Rogers, the eldest son of William Lister Rogers (Lefty) and Dorothy Hagar Rogers born on 7/7/1932, passed away peacefully at his Mercer Island home on May 13th 2025. His wife Marcia, three kids, seven grandchildren, one great grandchild, cousins, nieces, nephews, and many friends are all grieving the loss of this exceptional man.
Doug graduated from Stanford University with a business degree, served for a brief period as an Airforce officer, and married Marcia Jean Redlinger (a University of Washington English Major Validictorian) in 1961. While Doug's father initially pushed his eldest son to become a successful doctor, Doug quickly realized that he was doing much better in his business classes and he eventually showed everyone what he was capable of. At the height of his career, he was the president of two Seattle based shopping center building corporations where he supervised the construction and management of over 13 different shopping centers in Washington State. His largest addition was the development of Factoria Square mall in south Bellevue, but for everyone that knew him, he loved his smaller career both before and after his stressful years as a corporate president. Doug started as the Bellevue Square shopping manager in the early 60s when he had his first two kids. Doug and Marci bought a small apartment building behind the mall called the Chalet apartments that still exists today. They saved their money and had their first two kids (Bill and Linda) during the short period from 1961 to 1965 when they finally built their Mercer Island dream home that Marcia is still living in today. Erin (the youngest daughter) was born later in 1969. Shortly after moving to Mercer Island, Doug became the shopping center manager at the University Village in the Seattle area and eventually went back to that same position after leaving his job as a corporate president. He much preferred working the day to day operations at a single shopping center over the larger pressures he faced as a corporate president. Of course Marcia (not to be outdone by her husband's success), started her own 25+ year career as a very successful realtor for John L. Scott between the ages of 60 and 85, but that is another story.
All three of Doug's children have kids and the oldest of the seven grandchildren has provided Doug and Marcia with a great grandchild so it seems likely that the Rogers legacy will continue. Unfortunately, Doug's younger sister Louis Doggett and younger brother Reid Rogers passed away quite a few years ago, but he is survived by several Canadian relatives (cousins) and a variety of nieces and nephews on both sides of the family. Marcia can still count on her sister Shari for emotional support and her kids are continuing to provide for her care during this emotional period in her life.
Doug's father was well known in San Francisco society after Lefty won a gold medal in the 1924 Olympics for rugby, spent many years as a very successful surgeon, was a board member at Stanford, and after he worked to help found the American Cancer Society in San Francisco after his wife died of cancer in the late 60s. Lefty and the Hagars founded a very large and successful fish company called New England Fish Company that Doug worked at for several summers during his college years. Doug's brother Reid eventually became President. Unfortunately, the fish industry experienced a rather large downturn due to over fishing in the 1970s and the company eventually closed. Doug's mother was also quite successful as a woman in the 50s and 60s working as a United Nations diplomat in the Middle East.
Pretty much everyone who knew Doug loved or at least respected him. He was always committed to treating everyone that he met with respect and never had any enemies as far as any of us know. Loving father, grandfather, uncle, businessman, and friend...He will be missed by all of us. He did not want to have a formal service and chose to be cremated. His children are planning to have a brief meeting for the scattering of his ashes in three locations later this year. He primarily wanted his ashes to be scattered in Lake Washington, but we also plan on doing two smaller events in San Francisco and in Crescent Beach Canada for relatives that reside at those locations.
