The story of
We are sad to announce the passing of Donald David Jacobs of Seattle, Washington, after a brief illness. He was born with infantile cerebral palsy. Despite his many challenges, Don lived a long and happy life. He died at the age of age 75 on January 4th, 2024, in Seattle, Washington. He was born in Yakima, Washington, on May 20th, 1948, to his parents, Clarence and Mildred Jacobs. He was preceded in death by his older brothers and sisters-in-law Clyde and Pat Jacobs and Robert and Susan Jacobs and his nephew Michael Robert Jacobs. He is survived by 4 nieces and 3 nephews. Amal Grabinski, Director of Home and Lifestyle Programs at Provail, shared some thoughts. Don had been with PROVAIL since the 1980s - he lived at the Residential Center and then transitioned to an apartment in Bellevue. He happily landed at a home in Shoreline with a couple of housemates and was able to be a part of his neighborhood community. He loved going out to local restaurants and would spend all day out exploring his neighborhood. This was how he developed his own volunteer role wiping down tables at the local Starbucks!  He loved all things mechanical, like tractors and tools in particular, and had favorite hardhats that he wore when working. He also had a safety vest and work boots, and even when in the shop, went out of his way to look dapper! In his home in Shoreline, he had an area of the garage that was his shop where he did woodwork and general tinkering. He had a habit of leaving the garage door up and making friends with whoever passed by -- he made a lot of friends that way. He was an active member of his church community and had good family relationships with the remaining members of his family, particularly his nephew David who was very involved in his life in recent years.  As he got older, his activities and stamina were more limited, but he never stopped moving - even if it was more slowly. Don was truly one of the kindest gentlemen you would ever want to know. He valued his relationships and friendships deeply, and rarely forgot a face. One of my favorite things was when you first saw Don and he saw who it was -- he smiled with his whole face and body. He had close and special relationships with Yonatan (TC) and Janet (SC)  at his home, who supported him in every way but most importantly, helped him feel loved and cared for, which is all anyone wants. He had a close and important relationship with Gabe and Katie in the Clinic, both of whom helped him with his communication skills, tech access, and comfort -- and those were all things that helped him live his life in a way that was authentic and meaningful to him. Don will truly be missed by those who were in his orbit. I want to give a special thank you to house 10 staff who were so kind and gentle with Don, as well as our Nursing team (David and Lisa) who were tireless in their support of Don and his staff, and Kathy Earl, the Program Manager for the team. I know that hearts are hurting this morning.
