The story of
Domingo Toledo Alamo, of Salt Lake City, passed away peacefully at home on August 7, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was 80 years old. Domingo was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Domingo Toledo Alamo and Mercedes Alamo Arce. From a young age, he developed a love for mathematics and travel—two passions that would shape the course of his life. At 18, he moved to California to attend Stanford University, and later earned a PhD in Mathematics from Cornell University. Following postdoctoral work at Princeton and Columbia Universities, he joined the faculty at the University of Utah, where he had a long and distinguished career as a professor of mathematics from 1979 until his retirement in 2016. An avid world traveler, Domingo spent numerous sabbatical years with his family in Bures-sur-Yvette, France, at the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques, and also conducted academic research in Germany, England, and Mexico, among many other places. A devoted mentor and advisor to many, Domingo was known not only for his intellectual brilliance but also for his warm, patient, and generous spirit. He was also a loving husband and devoted parent to his children, his Papagena and three Papagenos, and he was never more joyful than when his grandson Oscar was playing in his lap. His home was a gathering place for friends, colleagues, and extended family from around the world, all of whom were welcomed with open arms. Domingo is survived by his wife of 39 years, Paula Schnitzer; his former wife, Sue Toledo; his four children, Laura Toledo, Roberto Toledo, David Toledo (Sirena Bliss), and Ramon Toledo (Katie Lewis-Toledo); and his two grandchildren, Jeremiah and Oscar. Honoring his wishes, his family will return him to Puerto Rico to rest in peace. Because Domingo’s friends and loved ones are spread across the globe, no formal memorial service will be held. Instead, the family invites you to share your memories on the “Living Memory” page. Memorial donations may be made to the Fourth Street Clinic or to a charity of your choice.
