Danny Michael Hinger (known as Dan or Skip to most) 79, of Tucson AZ passed away in Phoenix AZ on June 21 after a brief illness.
Dan was born Feb 23rd 1946, in Tacoma WA to Daniel and Mary (Berg) Hinger. He was raised in Tillicum WA before relocating to Tooele UT as a teenager where he met his wife Roberta "Suzi" Gamber. They married in the spring of 1967 in Killeen TX, while he was serving in the US Army 1st Armored Division, Artillery, at Ft Hood TX during the Vietnam War. They eventually relocated to Morgan UT, and he completed his Associates degree at Weber State University. He was very active in the Morgan County area serving as the Commander of the Volunteer Search and Rescue Squad for years and later as an EMT on the all volunteer county fire department. Dan spent his career working in the defense industry in civil service, including being a crane operator at Tooele Army Depot and inspection supervisor for DLA at Defense Depot Ogden. In 1997, they relocated back to Washington state and spent years in Poulsbo WA and Allyn WA. Dan completed his civil service career to retirement from DLA at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard Bremerton WA, and immediately moved to being a real estate broker for several years. Dan and Suzi have spent the last 5 years in Tucson AZ.
Dan was an outdoorsman all of his life enjoying trap and skeet shooting, snowmobiling, water skiing, motorcycle riding/racing, hunting, and was a voracious reader. He had a keen interest in the history and cultures of indigenous Americans and the fur trade era of the American West. Most of all, he was a kind and patient man who always put others above himself and had an amazing sense of humor. His family and friends were often willing victims to his pranks and shenanigans. His deep love of green jello and funeral potatoes was known far and wide and his sense of sarcasm was unrivaled.
Dan is survived by his wife, Roberta, his eldest daughter, Dana (Madelyn), and youngest daughter Erica (Lee). He was preceded in death by his parents, mother-in-law, father-in-law, and son-in-law. Per his wishes, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the Hinger family requests donations be made to the conservation of wild places, public lands, an animal rescue, or a veteran organization of your choosing.
