The story of
Alan R. Dedrick, age 78, of Hillsboro, Oregon, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, May 28, 2025. Al was born July 17, 1946, in Bronxville, NY, to Frances (Broadfoot) and Edgar Dedrick, and was a long-time resident of Erin, NY. Throughout his life, Al was a steady presence for his family and a devoted servant to his community. An Eagle Scout and a proud alumnus of Colgate University, Al was a conscientious objector who served with the US Army Medical Corp in Korea. Al worked for Sears, Roebuck & Co, Bradlees Department Stores, designed and opened PRO Home and Yard in Elmira for RKB Enterprises, and was the sole proprietor of Village PRO Hardware. He was the General Manager at Elmira Country Club when the new clubhouse was built. He also worked for Panosians, Sodexho at SUNY Binghamton, and retired from Cornell University. Al was active in many capacities with the First United Methodist Church of Horseheads. In addition to serving 12 years on the Horseheads school board, Al volunteered for Board of Family Services of Chemung County, the Chamber of Commerce, United Way, Arnot Mall Merchants’ Association, and the Southern Finger Lakes Board. He was the first recipient of the Community Foundation of Elmira–Corning’s ”Volunteer of the Year” award and a decorated member of the American Legion, Aloha, Oregon post. Al’s biggest passion was cheering on his children and grandchildren. He was a constant presence at recitals, soccer games, plays, track meets and basketball games. Al’s love for his children was rivaled only by his love for chocolate. He channeled that love by making treats for his loved ones on birthdays, holidays, and whenever his personal stash ran low. Al’s handmade whiskey sours earned him cross-generational fame from coast-to-coast, and his recipe will flavor holiday gatherings for generations to come. Generations were important to Al; he traced his family’s genealogy by hunting through cemeteries and old town record books well before Ancestry.com made it cool. Al is survived by his daughters Sarah (Shane) Vertner of Hillsboro, OR, Elizabeth Dedrick (Chris Gorman) of Seattle, WA, and daughter-in-law, Mandy (Morrell) Dedrick-Gerstner, of Canandaigua, NY; 11 grandchildren, two nephews, and six nieces, sisters-in-law Kay Dedrick Nashua, NH and Sara Baldwin, Holland, NE, brothers-in-law George (Paula) Middletown, CT and Robert Baldwin, Buckingham, VA. He was predeceased by his wife Ann in 1995, his son, Robert, in 2012, his parents, his sister, Clarissa Carabateas, his brother, Dr. Robert Dedrick, and a niece, Laura Carabateas. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Those wishing to remember Al may do so to the Memorial Fund, First United Methodist Church, 1030 W. Broad St, Horseheads 14845; the Ann Baldwin Dedrick Scholarship Fund c/o the Elmira Corning Community Foundation, 301 S. Main St, Horseheads, NY 14845; or charity of your choice.
