March 10, 2023
Early on the morning of Friday March 10th 2023 Carl Kenneth Barton left us to be with the Lord, he peacefully passed away at Banner Baywood hospital Mesa, Arizona. Carl was born to Cleve and Ruth Barton (Plymale) on March 15th 1941 in St. Louis, Missouri. He grew up in Reynolds Mo. which about 125 miles south of St. Louis, in a unincorporated town and is still unincorporated to this day with a population of around 5000 people. The family later moved to Peoria, Illinois where he attended junior high and high school. Carl joined the army straight out of high school. While home on leave, he met Linda Maxson whom was working at her aunts restaurant. They were soon married and off to Germany they went. Linda returned to the states to have their first child, Tammy. After the baby was born, Carl left the army, he served three years. Within the next three years he was blessed with two more children, Kenneth and Charlene. The family of five moved from Peoria, Illinois to Phoenix, Arizona. Carl worked in the flooring and tile trade part of his life. He was a hard worker, working 7 days a week with long hours at times. Because of his work ethics and always believing in saving money, Carl was able to purchase a brand new home in Glendale, Arizona at the age of 28. In the mid to late 70's, the beginning of a recession started and left him with little work. Carl sold the house and moved back to Peoria. He went to work as a subcontractor in flooring. Carl and Linda divorced after 18 years of marriage. He was granted custody of Kenneth, though he fought for all three. While on the job Carl hurt his back and was unable to work. He connected with a friend and leased a downtown tavern, the same one his dad run back in the 50's. During this time he remarried Valerie whom already had 5 children. She helped at the bar for about a few years. Then he decided to close the bar and went back to flooring. They divorced after 4 years. Carl and his brother, dale later took over their father's bar after their parents had both passed away. He started a new relationship which blessed him with his fourth child, Mary. Dale moved back to Phoenix and the bar was loosing money, so he shut it down. The relationship ended and he too moved back to Phoenix. Carl had family (brothers, sister, children, cousins, nieces and nephews) in both Peoria, IL and Phoenix, AZ so for the next thirty years he tended to move back and forth spending time with all. Carl loved Playing shuffleboard. He learned to play as a child in his father's tavern and continued playing most of his life. He Played in leagues, tournaments and against other professionals. It was his side hustle. Carl enjoyed fishing, whether it was the lakes in Arizona or the Illinois river, he loved fishing. Carl also enjoyed running the circuit of in-person dog racing around Arizona in the 60's and 70's and later off track betting. Carl was a St. Louis Cardinal fan watching it every time he got a chance and attended a few in person games. Carl was a very independent, private person and much of a loner except when it came down to spending time with family.
